Gearbox endplates

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I've just started building a 'big block' engine with a 'new' old SIL casing. I bought one of the last ones from jet200 years ago -- thinking, like many I'm sure, that it might be the last opportunity to get a 'new' case, ah well.

At any rate it's time to get going with it. I'm going though parts selection at this point. I have the original gearbox endplate (SIL) that came with the casing but it's a bit of a mess. I also have two innocenti S3 endplates that are in perfect condition.

I know Sticky recommends keeping endplates with matched casings but I'm inclined to use one of the innocenti ones instead (I'd also rather use the 'old' S3 kickstart setup). Please tell me this isn't a bad idea.

Of course I will test fit before making a final choice with the gearbox and layshaft/axle in place. Assuming everything is in spec and doesn't bind anywhere it should be fine -- no?

Thanks,

Tom

EDIT: It's been years since I last posted...looks like I'm back to zero posts... :(

If the locating pins on the Innocenti end plates line up with the SIL case then you'll be fine. If not you might have to use the SIL end plate (or find another Italian one).

What's "a bit of a mess" look like? Usually they are just surface rusty and the forging isn't as nice looking but they work just fine.

Thanks -- yes, the pins line up.

The SIL one isn't 'end of the world' bad. It's pretty much as you describe. The worst is some sharp edges around the roller bearing seat. For sure it could be smoothed out with a Dremel and 5 minutes of work. It's just a) I prefer the older kickstart (and have all the parts) and B) the Innocenti plate is a work of beauty in comparison.

Yeah, That's a good idea -- I might just do that.

After my last post I went back to the shop and cleaned it up a plastic brush and a dremel.

Off topic but is there any chance I can get my old membership number back  Mr. President? #226

Yep, I'll let Kieran know.
