Hack work

Recommended Posts

Not really a place for this so here it goes.

I have a customers bike in the shop for the standard "make it rideable" kind of request.

Seems easy enough

sort out the cables, electrical, clean the carb bla bla bla.

Take the bike for a test ride. Only to find a huge shake in the forks!

It turns out the lower frame fork race was left out and hack attempt was made to take up the negative space.

Lucky I had a frame race on the shelf that I'd been holding on to for about 10 years and the tool to install it.

I was told this was built by a John Morror. I don't know him, never met him or even heard of him. What I do know is that was dangerous work and he should not have anything to do with building bikes.

I did a short test ride down my alley and instantly knew there was something wrong. I thought the lock rings were loose at first but when I pulled the headset I saw that it was just going from bad to worse.

The top of the fork stem is hammered also. If anyone has some bent forks with good threads I can do a stem transplant.

I thought this post was going to be about sidecars!

Leaving the lower bearings out is the new way to lower the front end...

Ha! No side cars for me. Those things are death traps and take up way too much room.

Come to think of it, the sidecar I had for a few years was the only scooter I have ever crashed (KOW). Scared the kids pretty good when we went through a turn and started heading toward the creek.
