Workbench Recommendations

Recommended Posts

Jack - thanks for dropping-in here. Your garage is amazing, just an exceptional use of space and way more realistic to your average guy than the "dream garages" that you see featured all the time. ...I'm taking notes for sure!

I have a one-car garage, so space is incredibly tight, but I didn't want to spend money on a cheap, flimsy Craftsman workbench or anything like that. I made one workbench out of cut-down pallet rack (with welded support beams) topped with a solid-core door. It's rugged as hell and cost about $50 in parts.

For my main workbench, I opted for a pre-fab unit from Global Industrial, along with a butcher-block top from the same place. I was well-impressed with the quality, fit and thickness of everything. I mainly do wood-working projects, but will top half of the bench with steel sheet to use for engine work.

Here are some pictures of my set up. I still have to move some small parts around. I set up the heavier one with my vice and engine stand. Not pictured is my other table, Someone set a TV1 on it.

Oh yeah, lots of work, and very little time. Got to get ready for my winter builds.

Here's two great, huge threads on garagejournal.com just about workbenches:

"Workbenches from scratch":

http://garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50406

"Let's see your workbench":

http://garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=464

Tons and tons of ideas here, literally hours of worthwhile reading elsewhere on that forum too.
